improved the prognosis of IA patients. However, the high mortality, the increasing incidence of systemic fungal infections and rising medical costs have made prevention of fungal spore exposure by environmental protection a crucial challenge [2]. Guidelines from the National Agency for Health Accreditation and Evaluation (Agence Nationale d ’ Accr é ditation et d ’ Evaluation en Sant é [ANAES])/French Society of Hospital Hygiene (Soci é t é Fran ç aise d ’ Hygi è ne Hospitali è re [SFHH]) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [3 – 5] recommend the use of high effi ciency particulate arrestance (HEPA) air fi ltration. This has been shown to reduce airborne fungal contamination and decrease IA incidence [6 – 10], when combined with a Received 9 November 2010 ; Received in fi nal revised form 4 March 2011; Accepted 24 March 2011 Correspondence: Emilie Fr é alle, Laboratoire de Parasitologie-Mycologie, Centre de Biologie Pathologie, CHRU de Lille, Boulevard du Pr J. Dose-Response Relationship of Clinical Effi-cacy and Side Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy
Background: The electrical dose selected for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) must have an acceptable efficacy and no or minimal cognitive side-effects. We evaluated the clinical efficacy and cognitive side-effects of ECT in relation to the stimulus dose administered. Method: This study assessed 71 depressed patients who were treated with bilateral ECT. For evaluation of depressive and cognitive...

Methods: Five donor pigs infected with PRRSV (Day 0) were confi ned within a full-size trailer for a 4-hour contamination period on Days 3 to 7 (fi ve replicates). After each contamination period, a group of fi ve PRRSV-naive recipients (25 pigs total) replaced the donor pigs in the pen for 4 hours. The pen was not washed or sanitized between donor and recipient groups. Recipients were tested f...

Fungal infections, in particular candidemia, are a growing problem in immunocompetent patients [1]. Despite several guidelines, concern exists on the value of evidence supporting recommendations for the optimal treatment of candidemia in non-neutropenic adult patients [1,2]. In the midst of this controversy a critical reappraisal of the 2009 Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) guideli...

As early as the 19th century, Justus von Liebig (1803 – 1873) identifi ed the lack of vitality of soils and non-existent vigour of plants as relevant causes of increased infections of crops by fungal diseases. Organic farming requires alternative strategies for combating pests and diseases. Soil-applied sulphate fertilisation proved to signifi cantly reduce infection rate and severity of crops ...

76 Vegetated buff ers are a well-studied and widely used agricultural management practice for reducing nonpointsource pollution. A wealth of literature provides experimental data on their mitigation effi cacy. Th is paper aggregated many of these results and performed a meta-analysis to quantify the relationships between pollutant removal effi cacy and buff er width, buff er slope, soil type, a...
